Brewing on 33rd and 3rd

on the go

Coming to the coffee shop
on 33rd and 3rd
with a backpack full of ideas
and clairvoyants in my head.

Write an article for the paper
and one of them starts to cough,
trying to explain and insinuate
that there’s no truth in the name,
the title,
the words
in the story,
frivolous and boring,
uninteresting and numbing,
painstakingly grueling.

Find another story,
with more base for the face of the community —
no one wants to hear about a validated party
while flipping through the local life section
right before the funnies —
write poetry, they say.

“Forget about the article,
forget about updating your resume,
forget about another job application
to help pay the bills because
writing doesn’t pay much at all
so forget about the money,
and sit down in the corner of the coffee shop
and write a poem for your moment
because you love it —
don’t forget it.

Everything else can wait
but no for more than a day, today.”
