There’s no way around it. While the world does a lot of damage to us, we’re ultimately the ones who get end up getting in the way of the smallest of improvements we can make. We avoid real self-honesty because it hurts. Being honest forces us to admit that we have to rethink the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

A. My entire life. Once I hit a certain age, I just started doing the things I wanted, and I refused to apologize for any of it. You name it. Going out and partying with my friends. Traveling. Refusing to get married and have children. Moving abroad (that was a big one).

Every single one of those things posed issues to my family that resulted in judgement and ultimate estrangement. I’ll never apologize for any of it, because I had a right to be young, live my life, and figure out who I was — away from their assumptions and expectations of me.
