6 Reasons To Increase Your Sodium Intake

Take this advice with a grain of salt

Salt consists of sodium and chloride and it is important for normal physiologic function.

There has always been a big debate on whether salt is our friend or foe, and part of the reason why that is, is because recommendations for different people is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing.

Even for non-athletes, everyone is different and depending on their body’s shape and size, some people will require more salt than others.

A healthy diet should include no more than 2,300 mg and at least 1,500 mg each day of sodium for most adults, according to the American Heart Association.

Today’s main focus is on athletes and why they should increase their salt intake.

One study was conducted on athletes who exercised regularly over 90 minutes, especially under hot conditions where they lost a significant amount of sweat.

The conclusion showed that replacing salt and electrolytes lost in sweat was crucial for maintaining hydration. Therefore, increasing sodium and electrolytes was the way to go during and/ after an exercise session or athletic event. It was recommended that they increase sodium by 1 gram per hour when sweating heavily.

On the flip side, regular exercisers need not to worry about increasing their sodium intake. The dietary guidelines for sodium in food is likely adequate to replace any sodium lost while sweating.
