WNBA Weekly Power Rankings

Week of July 15, 2019

It took over a month, but as we approach the All-Star break, we are finally starting to see some stability in where teams fall in our power rankings. This week, no team moved more than one spot from last week’s rankings, and outside of the top four teams, there were actually no changes.

Still, the top tier of teams continues to jockey for position, and this week we have a new team in the top spot: the Las Vegas Aces. The Aces won two more games this week — including a win at last week’s top-ranked Mystics — to claim the top spot in the WNBA standings and in our rankings.

Here are this week’s rankings (movements from last week’s rankings are noted in parentheses):

Record: 11–5, Offensive Rating: 100.0, Defensive Rating: 92.7, Net Rating: 7.3

Here’s a list of things Vegas is number one in right now: WNBA standings, Her Hoop Stats power rankings, defensive rating, and number of 2019 All-Star starters. The Aces have three All-Star starters in A’ja Wilson, Liz Cambage and Kayla McBride, all of whom are helping them succeed on the offensive end of the court. But what really sets Vegas apart is its defensive effort. The next-best defensive team (Minnesota Lynx) is allowing nearly three points more per 100 possessions.

Record: 9–6, Offensive Rating: 109.7, Defensive Rating: 99.4, Net Rating: 10.3

A loss to the Aces on their home court cost the Mystics the top spot this week, but they still own the best offensive and net rating in the league. Washington’s offense is in its own tier — the next best team is scoring 8 less points per 100 possessions, for comparison.

Record: 11–6, Offensive Rating: 100.0, Defensive Rating: 97.1, Net Rating: 2.9

After a five-game losing streak, including a rather surprising loss at Atlanta on Wednesday, Connecticut desperately needed a win. They finally got one with a convincing 79–64 win over the Mercury at home (and in Diana Taurasi’s season debut, for good measure). The Sun picked up a second straight win at Indiana on Sunday as well. The wins coincided with a fourth player of the week award for Jonquel Jones, who averaged 16.7 points per game last week and shot over 60 percent from the floor across the two wins. If the All-Star has emerged from the shooting slump she was in through most of the losing streak, there’s a good chance the Sun will keep adding to the win column.

Record: 10–7, Offensive Rating: 98.8, Defensive Rating: 95.4, Net Rating: 3.4

Record: 10–8, Offensive Rating: 98.7, Defensive Rating: 95.4, Net Rating: 2.6

Record: 9–7, Offensive Rating: 99.2, Defensive Rating: 99.6, Net Rating: -0.4

Record: 9–8, Offensive Rating: 100.0, Defensive Rating: 100.0, Net Rating: 0.0

Record: 7–8, Offensive Rating: 98.1, Defensive Rating: 99.4, Net Rating: -1.3

Record: 6–12, Offensive Rating: 101.5, Defensive Rating: 103.7, Net Rating: -2.2

Record: 7–10, Offensive Rating: 97.1, Defensive Rating: 104.1, Net Rating: -7.0

Record: 5–11, Offensive Rating: 95.5, Defensive Rating: 102.6, Net Rating: -7.1

Record: 5–11, Offensive Rating: 91.6, Defensive Rating: 100.3, Net Rating: -8.7
