Is it a hole I see inside my heart?. “Blame” is published by Monica Savage.
I recently went to Pondicherry. As we entered the city and passed by in the cab my attention was drawn to a church steeple. I was fascinated and wanted to go back and see the church.
The taxi driver told us he had another appointment and we should see the church at ease. I was disappointed but had to honor his commitment and so got dropped at the New Guest House of the ashram where we had our bookings.
I could not forget my first look at the church and wanted to visit it. On the first day, we were excited about the beach and walking in the town. On the second day, we hired a local taxi and first went to the church.
I got down from the taxi and saw an inscription that this was a 100-year-old church and it had celebrated its 100th year in 2007–2008. I immediately took a picture at the entrance of the gate.
The Archbishop in the year 1895, sanctified the bishopric of Pondicherry to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He wanted to build a church in dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The parish priest Reverend Fr. Telesphore Welter prepared the building plans. The construction of the new church was begun in 1902.
The historic first mass was held in the church on 17th December 1907 by Mgr. Gandhi.
In June 2009, at the end of the centenary celebrations, a request was placed to elevate this church into a Basilica.
This 100-year-old historical church is 50 m long, 48 m wide and 18 m high with a Latin rite cross shape in aerial view is in Gothic style. 24 main columns hold the structure.
