How To Find A Coach

There are many methods of finding a coach, for example, coach matching services, online directories etc. However, the key here is you. It is important you get along with your coach, feel that your personalities are complimentary, that they can provide you with what you need and balance supporting you and challenging you.

Before judging whether your coach is a good fit for you, we must find one first! Below are a few recommended ways you can go about finding a coach:

Simplistically, to find a coach, you must first consider the area of your life you are looking to improve, as there are many different types of coaches, for example: career, family, spiritual, financial, relationship and intuitive coaches. Once you have chosen, there are many other things to consider before choosing an individual coach:

All good coaches should have certain qualities. Some of these are:

There is a process to find you coach:

1. Get a free consultation: Most coaches offer free consultations, which gives you a chance to speak to them and see if they are what you want before you start paying. This is an opportunity to ask any questions you may have, learn about them and see if you feel they are a good fit for you; if you click. Ensure you ask all your questions that you need to make an informed decision: if you still feel uncertain once it is over, try speaking to other coaches and comparing them.

2. Consider how you feel: Are they a good fit with you? The key to finding the coach that is right for you resides in your gut feeling: do you feel like you are sitting with a friend having a good conversation when talking to your coach? If so, you may have found the right one.

It is important that you do not feel their personality clashes with your, i.e. you do not feel like they talk over you, or simply don’t understand you. Instead, a good coach should be someone you can open up to like a friend, while also maintaining professional boundaries, listening to you without judging and genty challenging you and asking you questions to help you dig deeper.

They should also be compatible with you in the method of communication: are you an auditory or visual learner? Is the way the coach presents information compatible to this? Coach Spotter says: “At times during coaching sessions, you may feel raw and vulnerable as you confront the painful areas of your life and do the hard work of personal growth. Your relationship with your coach, however, should be a safe place to cast aside your former life and greet the world with a new perspective.”

A coach should be able to make you feel comfortable while also being challenged, feel safe and at ease without being slow. The key here is trusting your gut feeling.

3. Consider their qualifications, As the government does not create any legal restrictions on who can be a life coach. Some coaches do get certified through licensing organizations, training programmes, etc, but the industry lacks uniformity in standards, therefore it may be difficult to assess whether they are a good coach, as anyone theoretically can claim they are a coach. Coach Spotter says: “Most who have a higher education use what they learned in school to increase their ability to help others. And most who are less experienced coaches have educated themselves by reading books, attending conferences, and most importantly, listening to their clients and incorporating their feedback.” Also consider reading reviews from previous clients.

If you do require your coach to have credentials, the International Coach Federation is widely recognized and highly reputable.

4. Supervision. Ensure that the coach has supervision and is in regular contact with a coach who they can discuss their coaching practice with. This ensures that the coach is operating at a higher level of coaching stanard and has someone to talk to about any potential coaching difficulties or support that the coach needs. All good coaches will have supervision.

5. Do they have a coach? I would never recommend working with a coach who does not have their own coach. Ask them the question if they don’t tell you. Selecting a coach is a big decision and you should get it right!

BONUS — Local or Online?

This essentially depends on the person. Most coaches believe that online and over-the-phone coaches are just as effective as coaching on person. Benefits include:
