Enhancing the balcony experience with Design Thinking Process.

Hey Folks👋

Welcome to my first design thinking case study where I focused on improving the balcony experience for my users using the design thinking process.

The task was to choose a part of the house and identify gaps that users encounter while interacting with that area and create a product that can not only assist them in achieving a better user experience but also used by large number of people.

The project begins with me and my group members fighting to chose for an area of the house. We had to justify our unfair advantage with the area and why that area should be allotted to us.

📌Problem Area I chose- Balcony

📌Why I choose this area- I have a balcony space in my house and I faced certain problems while interacting with the area. So, I knew that there will be a bias while doing this project. The main reason to choose this area was to learn on how can I overcome this bias and focus on the problems faced by the users.

With the balcony area in my hand it was time for me to apply design thinking process to build a product.

To understand the user’s perspective I prepared few questions related to their day to day experience with the balcony. Then I had 1v1 interview with 5 users from my group and wrote all the insights that I could get.

Before taking the interview, I was doubting myself. I think I had Imposter Syndrome and guess what I didn’t take any interview for 1 week😭. But after seeing other people in my group taking interviews I gathered up the courage, made a questionnare and conducted the interview💪.

📌Questions that I asked in the interview:-

I know some of these questions are leading questions. This is my first time taking 1v1 interviews and also I was scared to take the interviews. I will try not to do these mistakes in the future.

INSIGHT FROM USER 2

After taking user interviews now it was time to define all problems that could be solved for the user.

👉I wrote down all the problems that were faced by the users with the balcony area.

📌List of Problems Identified:-

In this stage I used every part of my brain cells to think and generate 8 ideas for each problem in 8 minutes only using the Crazy 8 technique.

List of ideas that I generated using Crazy 8 technique

📌List of ideas that I came up with:

👉After coming up with 32 ideas I chose my top 3 ideas from the whole list and move forward to the next stage.

THE STAGE WHERE YOUR IDEA BECOMES A REALITY.

📌The Problem I chose- Use the privacy screen on the balcony so that the people walking on the road cannot see whats happening on the balcony.

📌The reason I chose- One of the insights that I got from my interview was that the user wanted to have dinner with their family on the balcony but couldn’t do it because people walking on the road can see what they were doing on the balcony. Privacy is a major concern for us and with my solution I think it will the user to spend time with their family and will help a lot of people to walk and interact freely with the balcony without worrying about other people seeing whats happening in the balcony.

Before jumping into the prototype I wanted to know what all products are available in the market. After doing some searching I found what products are used to solve this problem.

EXISTING SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET

👉The existing solutions available covers the balcony area completely leaving no sunlight or air to come from outside.

👉This also takes away the feeling of openness of the balcony which I don’t want my users to face.

PAPER WIREFRAME
PROTOTYPE MADE IN FIGMA

👉This is a see-through mesh blind made of PVC material which helps the user to cover their balcony when they need some privacy. From outside the blind is opaque and from inside the blind is translucent.

👉The mesh technology will allow sunlight and air to pass through the blind and protects your balcony from excessive rain and dust.

👉The blind will be attached on the ceiling of the balcony and when the users needs to pull down the blind they can use the rope to pull down the blind.

👉The best part of this blind is that people walking on the road can’t see whats happening on the balcony but the user standing on the balcony can see the people on the road.

After creating the prototype it was important to test your product with the users to understand whether the solution worked or not. So, I did user testing with my 5 users to understand their perspective regarding the prototype I made.

📌Feedback I received from user testing:-

After getting user feedback I tried to incorporate the feedback into my prototype but I faced a major obstacle🥲.

Smart blinds require electricity to work. So if a user wants to install this blind on the balcony they need a plugin socket on the balcony or they need to connect with the nearest plugin socket.

This can be difficult for the user as the user has to install a plugin socket on the balcony (which is not feasible) or extend the connection of blind to the nearest socket (which is again difficult because one plugin point will always be used by the blind).

Also if the blind is fully automatic and if there is no electricity in the house then you cannot operate the blind.

👉To tackle this situation I made the product both manual and automatic.

📌MANUAL- Ropes will be there to roll up/down the curtain by the user as per their needs.

📌AUTOMATIC- The blind has a sensor which can detect the light in the surrounding and whenever there is low light it will automatically roll down the blind. This blind system will be powered by batteries.

The batteries can be easily removable or attached just like people do it with their T.V remote batteries. The smart blind will also be connected to your phone along with your other smart appliances and you can easily operate it.

FINAL REVISED PROTOTYPE

I want to thank my mentor Anudeep Ayyagari (UX Anudeep) and my fellow group members ( Rajalakshmi, Maithri, Meghna, Sandeep and Raj) for helping and guiding me throughout this project.

If you really liked my case study hit that 👏CLAP 👏button to show your love to me. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback in the comments.

Until next time!🍻
