Identity is the governor on everything in your life

Your identity is a thermostat.

Your life always returns to what your identity is set to. You have multiple thermostat settings… in your faith, your family life, your fitness level, your financial life.

As we keep growing, we need to keep adjusting our internal thermostat upwards to not only “get to the next level”, but to also keep from sliding back to the previous results we used to produce. Like driving a car, as the speed increases, the gears need to adjust upwards to get to a “new normal” RPM.

Ok, Great! So how?

Ed goes into depth as to the keys to adjusting our identity upwards. The one I identified with the most as something that I could increase action on is about “shock[ing] your system”.

I’m not sure if it’s my very technical and system driven personality… or if I’m just lazy, but I always look for the shortcuts, the lazy plug ‘n play ways to productivity and effectiveness. Even in writing this story, I’m thinking of how to keep writing stories more consistently to build an audience and share more of the great things I’ve been learning over the last few years. And in applying Ed’s key about “shock[ing] your system”, I’m stumbling through getting this story out, but I’m committed to make it happen while consciously disregarding how imperfect the grammar and story telling structure is.

To explain in more detail, what Ed means by “shock[ing] your system” is to take massive immediate action in a short period of time. As one vector of a 3-part cycle, our actions produce results. Those results affect our identity and, in turn, affect our actions. The more reps we get in, the better we get at the actions we take, and therefore, the better results we get which helps to naturally increase our identity. I keep in mind that our results may get worse anytime through out the process.
