The Fall of Angels

There once was an angel.

An angel who walked with the clouds. The sun smiled upon this angel, and the moon gazed mysteriously.

In their world, the moon was deemed to be darkness. In truth it was thought as the dark side of the sun, a dimmer version of the light of the world.

Its nature was forbidden in thought or action.

Our angel asked himself if this idea was true, for he did not know. This thought reached the other angels, who began to feel as if ours did not belong.

An idea occurred to the others, who convinced one of their own to speak with the curious one. The one who did not feel at home because he did not have all the answers. The one who sought more than what was given to him in his life in the clouds.

“He does not believe the same as we do,” one of the seven said. “The law says that a faltering is inconceivable. He must be thrown out.”

As this one of seven said these words, the other six had made up their minds in unison. Nodding, they understood exactly how to proceed.

“His humanity is returning,” a second said, “and he will be easily deceived.”

A third continued: “We must give him a reason to seek out the darkness, and then we can throw him back to a new life, new decisions…new opportunities.”

They called our angel over.

His faltering misaligned his thoughts from those of the seven, though he mistook this for benevolence, a sign that they were leaving him alone.

They could hear him, but his mind was busy with more human desires.

“Do you believe that the light of the sun and moon are one and the same?” the second of the seven asked.

“That is an odd question,” ours replied. “Do you?”

A fourth of the seven, one who had not spoken yet, became angered. “Has this thought crossed your mind before? Yes or no?”

The faltering angel thought and thought but did not know how to answer. Had they heard him wondering? Did they know he was in doubt? What would happen next?

He felt trapped, and in an instant, decided to run. A moment was forever as he turned and yet the seven allowed this to happen.

They let him free, because now there was a reason.

Yes, now there was a reason to throw him back.

He hid, and they followed his thoughts, his aura, until hours later they descended upon him. They bound him with ropes of pain taken from the world below.

The area the eight of the angels came to was known as the Home of the Faltering, although from our angel’s view, it was clear that no one lived here. Some home this was.

There was a small door built into the ground, big enough only for one person. The clouds broke apart for a span of about 3 feet in width and 4 feet in length. This hole collapsed around a wooden door that had a handle sticking up about 5 feet from the edge with a knob on the end.

A knob which opened it.

Only those who passed through had seen its underbelly, and not returned to pass on the information.

They said nothing, and threw him back to a life countless other souls knew nothing about.

Another countless number knew everything.

Fiction is a very specific outlet for me, and this is part of something bigger that I haven’t quite figured out yet. I hope this sparked something inside someone.
